Environmental Lights partnered with City Theatrical to deliver dramatic broadcast lighting for the 101st Scripps National Spelling Bee, held at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. When Scripps Television set out to reimagine its flagship academic competition for a modern primetime audience, the production team chose an integrated LED approach to transform the iconic venue into a visually compelling broadcast environment.

This project brought together an exceptional creative and technical team led by Lighting Designer John Viesta, with lighting and rigging provided by Main Light and scenery by Legacy Scenic. Environmental Lights and City Theatrical lighting solutions were central to realizing the design, supported by Lighting Director Tyler M. Perry, Programmer Bob Going, Production Gaffer John Salzmann, Production Electricians Eric Kasprisin, Nkosi Mason, and Tom Thayer, Production Head Rigger Shawn Robinson, and Production Rigger Nick Fedeli.

The Results

The installation brought a primetime visual language to one of the nation's most prestigious academic competitions. Drawing inspiration from classic British television—specifically the 1970s quiz show Mastermind, renowned for its use of light and shadow to focus all attention on the contestant—the design created atmosphere, scale, and dramatic focus without ever distracting from the student spellers at center stage.

Integrated LED systems added depth and texture throughout the scenic environment, giving broadcast viewers a richer visual experience while maintaining a calm, high-stakes setting for the competitors. The result was a polished, cinematic presentation that elevated the Spelling Bee without compromising its educational integrity.

Elevating a National Stage Through Lighting Design

D.A.R. Constitution Hall presented a unique challenge: designing a broadcast environment that enhanced production value for television audiences while preserving the quiet focus that young competitors require. Every lighting decision supported that balance—using contrast, scale, and visual hierarchy to make the event feel more significant on screen, while keeping attention exactly where it belongs.

Environmental Lights Eluxtra™ 5-in-1 Strip Light - RGB + Amber/6500K - 60/m - 24 VDC and EcoFlex LED Neon - RGB were integrated throughout the scenic elements, creating flexible, dynamic lighting accents that became an integral part of the show's overall visual language. For control and dimming, StudioPro 5 Channel DMX Digital Decoders - 8A per Channel delivered the precise, broadcast-grade dimming performance the production required.

Commissioning at Scale

With hundreds of feet of LED lighting integrated throughout the set, efficient commissioning was critical. City Theatrical DMXcat tools proved essential during load-in—at several points during installation, three DMXcats were deployed simultaneously as multiple scenic systems were brought online. The ability to quickly verify signal paths, identify issues, and troubleshoot without returning to the console kept the project on schedule and the team moving efficiently through a complex installation.

City Theatrical Standard Top Hats and Safer Side Arms helped manage fixture placement and control stray light throughout the production.

A Broadcast Standard

The 101st Scripps National Spelling Bee aired in May 2026, introducing a more cinematic visual style to one of America's most beloved academic traditions. The integrated LED lighting system delivered the flexibility, reliability, and on-camera performance the broadcast demanded—from preliminary rounds through the nationally televised finals.
