NBA Amazon Prime Video Studio, Amazon MGM Studios - Culver City, CA

Environmental Lights partnered with City Theatrical to deliver dynamic broadcast lighting for Amazon Prime Video's new flagship sports studio at Amazon MGM Studios in Culver City, California. When Amazon expanded its coverage of the National Basketball Association, the company commissioned an ambitious new broadcast environment--LAX47--designed to deliver visually stunning programming for pregame, halftime, and postgame analysis.

This project brought together an exceptional creative and technical team led by experiential design firm Jack Morton Worldwide, with scenic fabrication by Mystic Custom Fabrication. The collaboration was coordinated through the expertise of City Theatrical and Environmental Lights lighting solutions, working closely with lighting design by Airtime Lighting Group, AV integration by NEP Sweetwater, and rigging by Killswitch.


The Results

The installation transformed a 13,000-square-foot broadcast studio into a visually flexible environment capable of supporting multiple broadcast formats. The system delivers broadcast-perfect dimming and seamless color mixing--essential for on-camera performance--while providing the lighting flexibility needed to transition between high-energy sports coverage and intimate conversation segments.

At the center of the studio sits a large LED video volume displaying virtual basketball courts, surrounded by layered architectural elements: a wide open flex space, a second-story mezzanine anchor desk, a lounge conversation area, and an elevated wrap-around standup location. Advanced LED lighting integrates throughout these spaces, creating fluid lines of light that enhance the architecture while remaining invisible to the camera.

The basketball hoop anchor--a striking focal point visible from every camera angle--is illuminated with 360 degree pixel-controlled neon that creates a clean, evenly lit ring that elevates the entire environment's visual impact.


Lighting Excellence Through Collaboration

Environmental Lights collaborated closely with the team at City Theatrical and Mystic Custom Fabrication led by Senior Project Manager Ben Jacobson, to provide advanced low-voltage lighting solutions capable of delivering both dynamic color and clean white illumination across the studio's complex architecture.

The installation features over 830 reels of Eluxtra™ 5-in-1 Strip Light - RGB + 2400K/6500K - 60/m - 24 VDC - 5m Reel, delivering superior color mixing and true broadcast-grade dimming that passes rigorous camera testing. The five-channel design--RGB plus warm and cool white--enables designers to achieve precise color temperatures and smooth transitions without flicker or visible dimming artifacts on camera.

For accent features, the team integrated Eluxtra™ 360° LED Neon - PixelControl 4-in-1 - RGB+3000K - 5m reel around the basketball hoop, providing omnidirectional illumination that maintains visual consistency from any camera position.

Control and dimming were achieved using an ecosystem of advanced decoders: StudioPro 5 Channel DMX Digital Decoder - 8A per Channel(175 units), StudioPro 12 Channel DMX Digital Decoder - 5A per Channel (6 units), and StudioPro 25 Channel DMX Digital Decoder - 4A per Channel (14 units). These decoders provide the precise refresh rates and camera compatibility that broadcast environments demand.

System control integrated QolorFLEX(R) Connect 10 controllers (166 units), enabling centralized management across the distributed lighting network and seamless synchronization for dynamic effects.

A Broadcast Standard

The LAX47 studio debuted on October 23, 2025, during Amazon's Thursday Night Football coverage before transitioning to NBA pre-game, halftime, and postgame programming. The lighting system has proven its reliability and visual impact night after night, becoming the foundation for Amazon Prime Video's expanded sports broadcasting capabilities.
