Product Features

Sold as a continuous strip up to 1 reel (16.4 feet) in length; for example, if you buy 5 metric feet, you get a continuous strip 5 x 11.8 in. = 4.92 feet long, not 5 pieces. You can cut it yourself with wire cutters.

NOTE: InfraRed light is not visible. Do not buy this product for accent lighting or general illumination. It is for special purposes only.

Available in 850 and 940 nano meter wavelengths. We started with 940 nm, and some of our customers requested 850 nm because it is easier for some cameras to "see" 850 nm IR than 940. Perhaps you'd like to try a sample of each.

How should you decide between 850 and 940 nm? 850 nm is closer to the visible range (the red end of the spectrum.) 850 nm ribbon will appear significantly brighter than 940 nm on all cameras we have tested. Therefore, if you seek high output (brightness) use 850 nm. The only drawback to the 850 versus the 940 is that because it is so close to the visible end of the light spectrum, it glows faintly red and can be seen by the naked eye. (While the peak wavelength is invisible, a very small percentage of the light below the peak is visible.) The 940 is completely invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, if you need ribbon that is utterly invisible to the naked eye, buy 940 nm. If you want the highest output available and can tolerate a very faint red glow, buy 850 nm.

Dimmable with our Dimming LED Power Supply. With our dimming supply, you can dim up to 60 watts (2.5 reels = 41 feet = 750 LED's) on Class 2 wiring (less stringent standards than Class 1 wiring.)

Bright! We use the best LED's available
• High intensity LED ribbon strip
• Can be bent easily to fit different needs
• Cuttable
• Easy to install—Non-waterproof version has high-adhesion stickyback. Just peel off the wax paper and stick it to any clean, dry substrate. Waterproof version comes with 10 or more rubber tie downs if you buy the complete reel, plus a glue tube, plus at least 4 ribbon-to-cable connectors, plus 2 no-hole caps for dead ends, plus 2 4-hole caps for the live ends, as pictured at lower left of waterproof reel pages. You get those accessories with full-reel purchases only.

• Extra easy-to-use 2 conductor ribbon to cable connectors and 2 conductor ribbon to ribbon connectors are available
• 20,000 hour lifetime
• Moisture resistant
• Energy saving!
• RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) rated

• Available in Daylight White, Warm White, Red, Green and Blue, InfraRed (invisible 850 and 940 nm wavelength) and Color-Changing
• Available in waterproof and non-waterproof versions

• Sold 3 ways:
- By the 5 m (16.4 foot) reel
- By the "metric foot" (11.8 inches = 300mm)
- As a 7.75 inch sample kit with connector and battery

• Bonus for ordering complete reels (instead of the cut ribbon) is that a complete monochrome reel ships with Male Mini Power Supply Plug, suitable for connecting to our 60 watt adapter, 60 Watt 6 to 12 VDC Variable Voltage Power Supply (does not work with red or infrared ribbon flex) and Female Mini Power Supply Plug that we ship with our 150 watt power supply.
• Cut ribbon flex is not returnable
• Comprehensive installation manual is available. Ask for it!

Product Applications

Infrared (IR) radiation is electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength is longer than that of visible light, but shorter than that of terahertz radiation and microwaves. The name means "below red" (from the Latin infra, "below"), red being the color of visible light with the longest wavelength. Infrared radiation has wavelengths between about 750 nm and 1 mm, spanning three orders of magnitude.

Infrared imaging is used extensively for both military and civilian purposes. Military applications include target acquisition, surveillance, night vision, homing and tracking. Non-military uses include thermal efficiency analysis, remote temperature sensing, short-ranged wireless communication, spectroscopy, and weather forecasting. At the atomic level, infrared energy elicits vibrational modes in a molecule through a change in the dipole moment, making it a useful frequency range for study of these energy states. Infrared spectroscopy examines absorption and transmission of photons in the infrared energy range, based on their frequency and intensity.

For an example of an ingenious use of IR ribbon flex, please see the short videos explaining how to make a multi-touch display created by the TouchFactors Lab: Using Infrared LED Ribbons for Multi-Touch and Creating Multi-Touch Display with IR LED Ribbons.

Some people are also using our waterproof IR ribbon for exterior lighting for security purposes. The IR light is visible on most cameras and will light up intruders without their knowledge.
